Second-year Arabic

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will offer second-year Arabic in the 2010-11 academic year provided we have adequate enrollment. The course will be offered MWF 2:30 PM to 3:25 PM. If you are interested in enrolling, contact Dr. Richard Shryock (shryock@vt.edu) as soon as possible. A room number and CRN will be made available soon. You must have completed a year of Arabic to take the course. This course is not for native speakers of Arabic.


Although the Department of Foreign Languages does not have a degree option for Arabic, the following courses are offered:

ARBC 1105-6: Elementary Arabic 1 and 2 Course Information:
The objective of these classes is to learn elementary Arabic through reading, writing, and conversation. Students will be introduced to the Arabic alphabet and to the pronounciation of Arabic letters. Students will also be introduced to common phrases, greetings, and some aspects of Arab culture, focusing on the Egyptian Arabic dialect.

Course Materials:
The book used for Arabic 1 is Alif Baa with DVD's. Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds" by Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal and Abbas Al-Tonsi. There are two DVD's included in the book which are for students to use at home for practice and homework.

The text for Arabic 2 is Al-Kitaab fii Tacallum al-cArabiyya with DVDs. A Textbook for Beginning Arabic Part One" by Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal and Abbas Al-Tonsi.
