CHN 1105 & 1106 -- Elementary Chinese Classes
Both classes are three-credit introductory college courses of Mandarin Chinese, which is also known as Putonghua in Mainland China; and as Guoyu in Taiwan, R.O.C. These classes are embedded with custom and cultural aspects with emphasis on four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese language.
CHN 2105 & 2106 -- Intermediate Chinese Classes
These are second year of college Mandarin Chinese. Both classes are three-credit intermediate Chinese classes. The classes are embedded with custom and cultural aspects with emphasis on four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese language.
Third-year Chinese Classes
In 2012-13, we hope to be able to offer a third-year Chinese class. This course will be for students who have completed 2106 or the equivalent.

Virginia Tech is offering a faculty-led Summer II study abroad opportunity at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, Anhui Province: Six credits will be earned for language training four mornings per week and one credit for a series of short lectures in The History of Science in China. Additionally, every Wednesday students will attend a guaranteed internship position of their choice from a pool of local Chinese business partners in the fields of engineering, manufacturing, software design, international law, museums, sciences, etc., for which a certificate will be awarded at the end of the course. Fun cultural excursions complete the package, making this an innovative course designed to give students the combination of
1. Experiential learning abroad,
2. Skill in a critical language, and
3. On-the-job experience they can add to their employment history.
The program is a joint initiative of the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (VTLCI) and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Leading the course is Paul Hover, a VT University Libraries faculty librarian who speaks fluent Mandarin and lived in China three years.
