Classical Studies at Virginia Tech
**************************************************************************
Congratulations to our 2013 Graduates!
The Classical Studies Program within the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers study of the languages, literatures, art, history and culture of the ancient Greek and Roman World. Classical Studies has been part of Virginia Tech since the university's founding; among the first five professors at Tech in 1872 was a Classical Studies Professor.
Classical Studies offers a major in Classical Studies as well as various minors. Classical Studies students have the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research, independent study, outreach, service, and study abroad. Classical Studies strongly encourages participation in Study Abroad programs and runs its own programs to Greece and Italy in alternating summers. Classical Studies also edits and produces the on-line journal, Electronic Antiquity.
Faculty Research
Classical Studies faculty come from diverse departments on campus, such as Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Humanities, Art and Art History, and the Honors Program. They engage in a wide variety of research on topics including poetry, rhetoric, the Hellenistic world, ancient magic, excavations at Cyprus, and historiography.
Faculty Teaching
In addition to their dedication to research, the faculty also demonstrate a deep committment to undergraduate teaching, and have won major college and university teaching awards, including the Alumni, Diggs, Sporn, and Wine Awards.
