Chatroom Etiquette and Grading
|
The chatrooms in Spanish 2744 are an opportunity for you to show
how well you understand the information and ideas covered in the readings and
lectures. This is also a chance for you to show how you have interacted with this
information to form your own opinions. Through the chat environment, you will
be able to interact with other students in the class as well as the professor.
Keep in mind that these chats are classroom discussions and should be treated
as such. See below for information about how the chats work, what is expected
of you in the chatroom, and how you will be evaluated:
Etiquette and Chatroom Functionality:
- Once you follow a link to a given chatroom, type in your first and last
name in the blue (bottom) window in the boxt next to "What is your name."
DO NOT enter a name other than your own. DO NOT enter a chat under an alias,
a false name, or as "anonymous." This is an important rule that everyone
must follow. Entering the Spanish 2744 chat room and misrepresenting who you
are is a violation of the Virginia Tech Honor Code. Honor code violations
will not be taken lightly.
- Upon entering a chatroom, it is a good idea to type in a
message announcing your presence in the chat room. This will alert anyone else in the room that you are
present. All announcements and comments should be entered in the box below
"Please enter your remarks here." After entering your name and your announcement, press "SUBMIT REMARKS."
Your
comments will appear in the green (top) window along with your name, date, and submission time.
As new remarks are submitted, the old remarks will be pushed to the bottom of the screen.
- Read the focus questions in the top window and begin responding by typing
your responses in the blue (bottom) window. Press "SUBMIT REMARKS" after you
have entered your response. Keep your responses fairly brief and conversation-friendly.
Do not simply answer the questions; feel free to respond to past comments
made by other students (this will often be a requirement in some chat assignments).
Be sure to fully support your comments. Stay on the subject, but go as in-depth
as you wish.
- Class members will no doubt disagree with one another on various issues
and articles discussed in class and on-line. That's fine -- disagreement and
critique promote deeper understanding. But please take care to distinguish
academic criticism and political debate from personal attacks and "power plays."
In other words, if you are offering criticism, do not frame your remarks in
ways that are demeaning to others. By the same token, try not to be defensive
if your idea receives criticism in a way that really is not a personal attack.
With this in mind, we can have lively discussions which prompt us all the
think more critically about the assumptions, feelings, and values we hold.
- When you have completed your chat, sign off by saying farewell to your chat-mates.
- When finished with the chat, you MUST QUIT OUT OF NETSCAPE or else anyone
who uses your machine after you can submit comments to this chatroom using
your name. Do not simply close the Netscape window -- go under "FILE" on the
menu and choose "QUIT." This is imperative!
Grading:
You will be graded on the quantity and quality of responses you contribute to the chat.
Please remember that this is not a social chat room, but an ACADEMIC space. All conversation
should be geared toward an academic investigation of ideas. Please exercise good manners;
you will be held accountable for all you "say" in the chatroom.
