    Other factors to include:
As a general rule of thumb, one year of high school foreign language equals one semester of university-level study. Example: If you took four years of high school language that would be roughly the same as finishing four semesters of foreign language here. You should consider starting with 3105.

For every year you have not been taking a foreign language, subtract a semester. Example: If you studied four years of French and stopped in your junior year of high school and are now a sophomore at VPI&SU, then you should probably sign up for French 2105. (Four years of high school = four semesters, minus two semesters.)

Other factors to consider. If you took AP or honors foreign language, you will probably want to take a course on the high end of what is recommended in the chart above. If you did not do well in your high school language classes or do not feel you learned much, you should opt for the lower end of what is suggested.

If a student has completed three years or more of a single foreign language in high school and wishes to take 1105 or 1106, permission must first be granted. You'll need to contact the coordinator of the French Section, Dr. Sharon Johnson.
