It is important to note the distinction between institutional francophonie and cultural francophonie. Although French is not an official language in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon, it is widely used in literature and films.

The OIF has Observer Status in the United Nations General Assembly and is an observer to the European Union, the Organization of African Unity and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.
