The program includes guided tours of Paris, excursions, and intensive language and culture study at the world-renowned
Alliance Française. The Alliance Française is situated in one of the most picturesque parts of the city, within walking distance of Montparnasse, the famous Luxembourg Gardens and the Latin Quarter. Courses will be held in
the morning, leaving the afternoons free for discovering Paris and the surrounding region.
Students will receive six semester hours of credit for two of the following French
courses: elementary French (1105 or 1106), intermediate French (2105 or 2106), advanced French (3105 or 3106), oral
proficiency (3125, 3126), advanced French culture and civilization (3206), a waiver for introduction to French literature
(3304) or Study Abroad elective credit (3984).
Students will share rooms with other students on our program in the FIAP Jean Monnet, located near the Alliance Française. The facility is best described as a cross between a dormitory and a hotel.
The estimated price for the 2010 program is $6,000. (Note this price is subject to change based on the value of the dollar relative to the euro.) This includes:
Room and board including breakfast and another meal (either
lunch or dinner) per day
Courses at the Alliance Française
Three guided visits of Paris.
Three trips outside of Paris: to
Giverny, to visit the impressionist painter Claude Monet's house, studio
and gardens; to Chartres, to see one of the
finest and most impressive gothic cathedrals from the Middle Ages; to Chambord, a Renaissance château in the Loire
Valley , after which we visit a nearby winery.
Applying to the Paris Program:
APPLICATION FOR PROGRAM ADMISSION: 2010
Step 1: By December 7, you need to turn in your application in an envelope to the program director, Dr. Médoune Guèye (321 Major William) or fill out the electronic application form from Studio Abroad. If you are accepted to the program, the FLL office will establish an account at the Bursar for you. It takes 2-3 days for the program fee to be entered on Banner for study abroad. You will receive an email from the Bursar office letting you know that you have to pay the deposit of $2,000. The money has to be paid by January 2 at the latest.
Step 2: Once your account has been billed, fill out this T-pay form and have it accompany your down payment of $2,000. The check will need to be made out to the Treasurer of Virginia Tech. You can also pay online. If you pay online, make sure to call the Bursar office to let them know that the money you have deposited is for a Departmental Study Abroad Application Deposit (Detail Code P043).
The second deposit ($4,000) due on April 7 needs to be accompanied by the T-pay form as well. Ensure that your banner account has posted that fee before paying.
Enrollment is limited to 20 students.
