Jamie Bishop Memorial Scholarship for German Majors and Minors Studying Abroad


A scholarship established in memory and in honor of Christopher James "Jamie" Bishop, who died during the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. Jamie was a faculty member in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. As a German instructor, he held "the conviction that learning a foreign language and culture is not just a joy, but is fundamental to our civilization - if we are to be civilized."

Criteria for the recipient:

  • Must be an undergraduate German major or minor at the time of receipt of the study abroad funds
  • Must be studying abroad for either one or two semesters during the award year (students pursuing an internship or research in a German-speaking country also are eligible)
    Application deadline: April 2, 2012

    Application process and award notification:

    Please complete this application form and submit it electronically to Dr. Liesl Allingham (lallingh@vt.edu) by the deadline above. The applications will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. Current members are: Dr. Liesl Allingham, Dr. Esther Bauer, and Dr. Debra Stoudt. Notification of awards will be made by May 1.
