ISLI and the Virginia Tech Mission:

As a land grant university, Virginia Tech has the mandate to respond to the needs of the citizens of Virginia. In keeping with the mission of Virginia Tech, 26 years ago the Intensive Second Language Institute (ISLI) was conceived as an outreach program for the professional enrichment of Virginia educators. The program is also open to advanced undergraduate students of Virginia Tech as well as to graduate students pursuing an advanced degree in a related field.

ISLI Credit Options:

Students may use ISLI classes for one of the following options:

  1. Non-Degree: Non-Degree students must have graduated from an accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 3.0. You may take ISLI courses with a grade of A-F or Pass/Fail. If you choose the Pass/Fail option, these graduate credits are only applicable for (re)certification or endorsement, and cannot be counted towards a degree program.
  2. For the M.A. Ed. or Ph.D. in the College of Education, Virginia Tech: You will need to formally apply for acceptance into the Graduate School; see the far right column for pertinent links. Your ISLI grades must be A-F, and these graduate credits will be available to be used towards the degree now or later. They will also count for (re)certification or endorsement credit.
  3. For the "Commonwealth Campus" Option: This is the option typically used by ISLI participants who are not pursuing a graduate degree right now. Students must have graduated from an accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 2.0. This option allows qualified students to enroll in graduate work at Virginia Tech and earn up to 12 graduate credit hours. You may take courses Pass/Fail or for a grade of A-F. Only A-F grades may be applicable towards a graduate degree at Virginia Tech or at another institution, provided that the program in question approves the credits. Commonwealth Campus credits will also count towards certification, recertification or endorsement.
  4. For Undergraduate Advanced Credit: For advanced undergraduate students, permission is required from the Director.

ISLI 2012 Spanish Courses

  • Spanish Dialectology

In response to eager student demand, ISLI 2012 will offer a new course on Spanish Dialectology! Designed to increase participants' understanding of language in context, this course examines the diversity of Spanish varieties spoken in Spanish America and the Iberian Peninsula. The class approaches the field of dialectology from two perspectives: diachronic (the historical, social, and linguistic factors that were involved in dialect formation) and synchronic (phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical descriptions of modern dialects). Students gain familiarity with and understanding of varieties of Spanish by working with oral and written texts. Meets 9 a.m. - 12 noon. (3 cr.)

  • Contextualized Oral Practice and Grammar Review

Guided conversation in small groups designed to increase and refine the oral proficiency level of participants. Study of the most common difficulties in Spanish grammar and of proficiency principles used to ascertain progress in speaking skills. Meets 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. (3 credits)

  • Course contents will not duplicate offerings from the past three years.
