Accelerated BA - MA program

Quallifed Virginia Tech undergraduates may begin earning graduate credit while completing the undergraduate major in French or Spanish. Students must apply and be accepted into the BA-MA program before taking graduate courses for double credit. Graduate credit will not be granted retroactively.

Admission criteria

  • Current enrollment as a French or Spanish major at Virginia Tech
  • 3.3 undergraduate GPA
  • At least 6 hours of course credit in French or Spanish at the 4000 level

Application materials

  • Graduate school application form
  • CV or resume
  • Personal statement of motivation and career objectives
  • Official undergraduate transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Writing sample of 5-10 pages in French or Spanish (preferably an academic paper)
  • Applicants may be asked to demonstrate linguistic proficiency in French or Spanish either by attaining satisfactory results on a recognized oral exam or by undergoing an oral interview with departmental faculty.

Credits to be double counted towards undergraduate and graduate degrees

Students enrolled in the accelerated BA-MA may double count up to 12 credits. You must apply and be accepted BEFORE the beginning of the semester when the courses are taken. Only 5000-level courses taken in last 12 months of BA may count toward both degrees. All requirements must be met for both the undergraduate major and the graduate degree, including the MA thesis or reading list exam.
