Description: This course is designed to introduce students to general notions of French culture and civilization from its origins to the present day. We will trace the development of French civilization with readings in cultural history and literary texts and through the visual arts. We will focus on transformations of French society while noting the continuity of its culture through institutions and traditions.

In addition to building students' knowledge about France, they course is designed to develop their ability to express their ideas both orally and in writing about the topic.

Required text: Illustrated History: France, Jones, Collin. London: Cambridge University Press, 1994.

The text will be supplemented with a number of online resources.

Grade:

Basics of the class:
  • Attendance and active participation in class are required. If you are going to miss class, let the professor know in advance.
  • Tardiness. You are expected to arrive in class on time. Arriving late disrupts class for your classmates and your professor. If you have a class immediately before our and it is located on the other side of campus, please let the professor know.
  • Missed classes. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to get notes from a classmate.
  • Cell Phones and Computers: Please turn off cell phones before class begins. Their use in class, including texting, is prohibited. If your phone happens to ring during class, please silence it immediately. Do not answer or check it. You may not use computers in class.
  • Special Accommodations: Students needing special accommodations should contact me with a written description of the necessary accommodations.
