History


Virginia Tech is proud to be a member of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Spanish Honor Society. Sigma Delta Pi was founded November 14, 1919, at the University of California (Berkeley). Sigma Delta Pi recognizes excellence in the study of the Spanish language, civilization, and literature. The Virginia Tech chapter Lambda Psi was chartered in 1977. There are now over 500 chapters.

 

 

 

Mission

         To honor those who seek and attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and the culture of the Spanish speaking peoples.

         To honor those who have made Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known in the English-speaking world.

         To encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in, and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture.

         To foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech.

         To serve its membership in ways which will contribute to the attainment of the goals and ideals of the society.

 

Membership

STUDENT MEMBERSHIP:

Students are usually eligible when they attain sophomore standing.
The basic requirements for student membership are as follows.

The student:

         Must have completed two years of study of college-level Spanish or the equivalent thereof, including at least one course in Hispanic literature or culture and civilization. The equivalent can be met in a variety of ways.

         Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale in all Spanish courses taken.

         Must have an overall minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00.

         May be elected to membership while enrolled in the required Hispanic literature or culture and civilization course if the instructor of the course will certify that the student's work is of "A" or "B" quality.

         Membership shall not be denied nor granted to any student because of race, gender, creed, or color.

         Graduate students may be admitted to active membership if they fulfill the above requirements.

ALUMNUS MEMBERSHIP:
A student member becomes an almunus member after he/she is no longer enrolled at the college or university. Alumni members are always welcome at chapter activities.


HONORARY MEMBERSHIP:

Persons who are supportive of things Hispanic and the local chapter may be elected to this category of membership. Members of the Spanish teaching staff and other faculty members or college administrative officials notably devoted to the goals and ideals of Sigma Delta Pi and who have supported the work of the chapter are generally initiated as honorary members. Honorary membership is not open to graduate or undergraduate students.

 


 

 

Awards and Scholarships

Sigma Delta Pi grants several awards, such as El Premio Jose Martel, El Premio Gabriela Mistral, El Premio Capitulo de Honor y Merito, and offers students scholarships for summer study in Spain or Spanish America. Interested students should contact their Faculty Chapter Advisor for more information on scholarships.
