Full-Time Spanish Faculty
Judith L. Shrum is Professor of Spanish and Second Language Education. She is lead author of Teacher's Handbook: Contextualized Language Instruction, published by Thomson/Heinle, currently in its 3rd edition. She is also co-author (with Eileen Glisan) of Enlaces, an intermediate college-level Spanish textbook, in two editions. She is author of articles on wait-time in second language classrooms, and teacher beliefs about language teaching and learning. Her work appeared in Foreign Language Annals, Educational Policy, and Theory into Practice. She served as a member of the board of directors of the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. She is currently a program reviewer for ACTFL/NCATE programs and serves as one of six members of the audit team, reviewing all program reports for institutions preparing foreign language teachers. Associated with that work she gives workshops on ACTFL/NCATE program report preparation annually at the ACTFL conference and at individual institutions. She regularly gives workshops for teachers on topics related to 21st century pedagogy: using authentic materials, helping learners to develop proficiency, designing standards- and research-based lessons and assessments. She helped Educational Testing Service redesign the Praxis II exam. She served two terms as Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, several terms as Coordinator of Spanish, and 25 years as director of the Second Language Education program at Virginia Tech. She is currently an affiliated faculty member in the School of Education.
