Why Study Spanish at Virginia Tech?
The Program:
We offer a proficiency-oriented program for majors, double majors, minors
and interested students, with specific proficiency-level goals for all first,
second, and third-year courses. Furthermore, we provide:

- diagnostic testing to help determine proper entry into the program at
first, second or third-year levels
- two courses designed to help students achieve the Advanced level on
the Oral Proficiency Interview
- credit for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate work
- a wide range of courses in Hispanic literature, culture, civilization,
linguistics and business
- a two-week intensive summer immersion
program for graduate and advanced undergraduate students
- a nationally recognized program in teacher education
- a commitment to the use of technology for instruction
- multiple study abroad options:
- Summer program for six
weeks in Spain
- Year-long or semester-long exchange program in Ecuador
- Exchange programs throughout the Spanish-speaking world through
the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and in Puerto Rico
through the National Student Exchange (NSE)
The Faculty:
- Several faculty members have won the University's highest awards for
teaching excellence.
- All regular faculty members have experience and/or training to assist
students in developing proficiency. A certified Oral Proficiency examiner
is available.
- All faculty maintain active research programs that relate their specific
field of expertise to classroom instruction in language, literature, linguistics,
culture/civilization and pedagogy.
The Students:
- Círculo Hispánico, a student-directed organization that
plans educational, cultural, and recreational events
- Café Hispánico, informal conversation practice meets weekly
- national honorary societies for students
- scholarships
