Study Abroad in Ecuador

Expectations

Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), located in the capital of Quito, Ecuador, have an agreement providing the opportunity for students from each institution to spend one or more semesters studying as exchange students at the other cooperating university.  Under the terms of this agreement, students pay their tuition and fees at the home institution and thus remain officially enrolled at the home institution while abroad.  Students from all areas of study are invited to apply.  Participants in the exchange generally are expected to meet the following conditions:

Have completed at least one full year of study at the home institution. It is expected that most students will be rising juniors or seniors.  It is also possible for graduate students to participate in the exchange.

Be in good standing at the home institution and present a minimum overall QCA of 2.75, although preference may be given to students according to the greater strength of their QCA.  Exceptions to the minimum QCA requirement also may be considered on an individual basis.

Satisfy the language proficiency requirement for admission to the host institution.  Some coursework may be done in English at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, but Virginia Tech students normally are expected to have completed at least two semesters of 3000-level coursework in Spanish with grades of “B” or better, or to have satisfactory proficiency in all Spanish language skills.

Receive transfer credit from the USFQ (generally 12 credits per semester) to Virginia Tech in accordance with established transfer procedures.
