Getting into a Full Class / New Force-Ad Policy
for first-year language courses

Despite some increased funding for 2008-2009, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is unable to satisfy the demand for all its classes. Although many classes are full on the first day of class, quite a few seats become available during the first week of classes.

We will continue our policy of automatically dropping students who are absent either the first or second day of classes. This makes room for other students wishing to add the class. Students will add classes on a first-come, first-serve basis as students are dropped from class. (One exception to this is Japanese which has a waiting list for 2008-9.) Instructors will not be signing force-ad forms.

If you would like to take a first-year class that is full, attend the class and then check repeatedly online to see if a seat opens up. Please be persistant though the end of the first week. We are able to accommodate a considerable number of students each semester.
